Tips on Keeping your Yacht and Kit Secure
A few simple measures can make your boat a less attractive target for thieves.
- join a marine watch scheme or encourage fellow yachtsmen to keep an eye on things when you are not there
- register with the BMF or a local Boat Mark scheme
- engrave kit with the boat's name or registration number, or your postcode
- etch the hull moulding number or boat registration number into the windows
- fit good quality locks to doors, hatches and deck lockers
- ensure hinges and locks cannot be tampered with from the outside
- stow small items out of sight or take them home
- secure large items to the boat with wire strops and padlocks (and that includes the tender)
- use a special lock for the outboard motor
- clamp your trailer or chain it to a fixed post
- use wire strops and padlocks to secure sailboards and dinghies to the roof rack
- make sure the roof rack is well secured to the car
- install an alarm
