Avoiding Common Sailing Injuries

Hospital Accident and Emergency Teams report that the most common injuries that occur when sailing are to the hands, often involving cleats and winches. Less frequent, thankfully, but more serious, can be a blow from the boom, especially a blow to the head. And more serious still, A&E see people suffering from effects, including injury and hypothermia of falling overboard.

Noone wants to spend the day in A&E, so remember:

  • use winches and cleats with care to keep hands and fingers safe
  • keep out of the way of the boom
  • warn less experienced sailors about the boom swinging
  • always wear an inflated life jacket
  • when appropriate wear a safety harness
